The Fox Gets Away Tonight

No bigger than a cat
but easily distinguishable in silhouette
young fox emerges from the woods
beside the narrow road
and slices across
at a moderate steady lope
not entering the brush
and boulder terrain
on the other side
instead running along
the very edge of the road
down a steep grade
still in no particular hurry
despite the slowing car close behind
focusing on each next step
and that perfect spot to disappear
into the night
which she does as suddenly
as she had appeared
though a tiny bit less young.
